It is still in use with the military and diplomatic departments using cryptography and the U.S. It is fairly resilient to the propagation effects that the HF bands present but newer modes have been developed that allow for more reliable data transmission. It is still a popular mode in Amateur Radio and there are several contests that are available exclusively for RTTY. RTTY has declined in use as more efficient methods have been developed.
